Getting Your Garden Ready For Summer

From tiny walled yard to a large grassy garden you can create an outside space to enjoy this summer.

First things first, start with some basic maintenance. Have a good sweep and clean up, clearing any leaves and litter and anything which has been abandoned in the garden over the cooler months.

Have a good check of fences and any sheds or garages for any damaged caused over the winter and make repairs. It is also a good idea to check on gutters and drains at the same time. Give your fence a lick of paint or treatment to protect it through the summer months.

Next, start with the lawn and give it a cut – this will instantly transform the garden and leave it looking neat and tidy immediately. Remember not to cut it too short in the summer as it will actually look far less healthy. Once you have given it a cut then it might be worth giving it a feed. There are a number of different products available at your local garden centre or DIY store.

If you have a patio or decking area give it a good clean. A jet wash can be a great way of removing the dirt and grime from winter. Then remove any weeds between paving stones and make any repairs to the grout where needed.

After winter it is a good idea to give the shed a good clear out. Often clutter accumulates over the winter months. Completely empty out the shed and have a good sort through everything. Give the shed a good clean out and then only put back the items that you really need. Adding shelving and hooks can really help to keep the shed more organised and tidy.

If you have borders and pots, give them a good weed and turn over the soil. Consider planting some night scented flowers like Phlox, Honeysuckle and Jasmine. Herbs are a great idea near the BBQ and kitchen.

It’s a good idea to have at least a set of chairs and table. You can get a bistro set relatively cheaply. If you have left furniture out over the winter, give it a clean and re paint if needed.

Add some great accessories to brighten up the seating area – there are some beautiful cushions and outdoor rugs which can be used inside and out. Adding a firepit will make your seating area more useable on a cooler evening. Solar panel lights are also a good way of getting even more use out of your garden in the evenings. They are also a eco friendly way to light up your outdoor space. Ikea do a great budget range of outdoor lighting and accessories.

Next up, give your BBQ a good thorough clean. Check it is all in good working order and remember to stock up on fuel so you are all ready when a sunny Sunday strikes.

It is a good idea to add some shade. There are a variety of way to do this with awnings, a parasol or a pergola and climbers.

Let’s hope this sunny weather we have had the last few weeks continues on into the summer.
